21st OOAK Design: Faerie of Winter

Faerie of Winter
wfclosefrontframe.jpg

"A fairy went a-marketing -
She bought a winter gown
All stitched about with gossamer
And lined with thistledown.
She wore it all the afternoon
With prancing and delight,
Then gave it to a little frog
To keep him warm at night."

"Winter Coverlets"

Winter spins her coverlets,
Soft as eiderdown,
From gently falling flakes of white
And lays them all around.

Winter weaves her frosty lace
To cover brooks and streams,
Fairy stitching to the banks
With frilly, crystal seams.

Winter drapes an ermine cloak
O'er mighty mountains high,
And knits an icy stocking cap
On peaks that reach the sky.

Wraps the sleeping earth beneath
In comforters so light
Tucks the hills and valleys in
From bleak and bitter night.

Winter's soft, white arms embrace
The barren earth below,
And shelter her with cozy quilts
All made of fluffy snow.

"February Twilight"

I stood beside a hill
Smooth with new-laid snow,
A single star looked out
From the cold evening glow.
There was no other creature
That saw what I could see--
I stood and watched the evening star
As long as it watched me.

This is the last in my series of seasonal "faeries": the Faerie of Winter shimmers in her frosty glory, cradling a snow-white dove beneath its nest of snow-dusted evergreens and icy boughs.

The colors used in this design reflect a moon-lit winter's night: the outfit of iridescent white and silver, and the contrast of the faerie's luminous, pale skin and midnight-black hair.

The doll used as the basis of this design is the highly collectible "Moon Goddess" Barbie, whose coloring and features were already perfect: her ice-blue eyes, sparkly eye-shadow and pale pink lips were not retouched. Her white skin has been enhanced with "fairy dust"--touches of a transparent acrylic "pearlizer," and her long, shiny black hair has been given a soft wave and pulled up in a high pony-tail in a wrap of white fur and iridescent ribbon.

The outfit comes in three separate and removable parts: bodice, sleeves, and skirt. The bodice and skirt are both made of an overlay of transparent white netting fabric with white snowflakes embellished with silver glitter over two layers of silver netting--the effect is quite spectacular! The fitted bodice has a pointed, dropped waist accented with silver braid, and white fur trims the decolletage and forms a high, portrait collar. Long, separate sleeves, a medieval style, flutter from her arms to the ground and are of the translucent snowflake netting, tying with white, satin ribbons to her upper arms. The extremely full, three-layered skirt sweeps the ground in glorious folds, making her look as though she floats. The white, snowflake layer is trimmed with white fur and silver braid. Underneath the skirt, to enhance its fullness, are layers of silver tulle. Her accessories include pearly-white ballet slippers tied with iridescent ribbon and a pair of white, feathered wings (these are not permanently attached to the doll, rather they are tied to the body underneath the bodice). She holds a white dove.

This faerie comes with two stands: one is the display stand that provides a seasonal backdrop, and also another stand to hold the doll. Because of the full skirt, I decided that the doll displayed better placed in front of the display stand rather than attached to it, as the other seasonal faeries have been. The display stand provides a wintery tableau, with snow frosted leaves and flowers creeping up the ice-encased "tree,"the base of which is covered with reindeer moss and the "trunk" is entwined with evergreen ivy. Nestled among the frosted evergreen boughs, pinecone and twigs at the top of the tree is another white dove.

"Winter"

WINTER, a sharp bitter day;
the robin turns plump against the cold;
the sun is weak;
silver faded from gold,
he is late in his coming and short in his stay.

Man, beast, bird and air all purging, all cleansing, earth already purified awaits the rite of spring;
Her bridal gown of virgin snow and frosts in her hair,
A snowdrop by the road today bowed gracefully and high upon the wing up in the sparkling nothingness, a lone bird began to sing
Can gentle spring be far away?
