"Ele est si bele e gente dame egregia

Cum ele fust imperatoris filia,

De beal semblant e pulcra continincia;

Ele est le flur in omni regis curia."

My translation:

[She is a noble lady, so beautiful and genteel,

like the daughter of an emperor is she,

of beautiful visage and lovely modesty,

The flower of every king's court is she.]

This is an excerpt from a wonderful, 14th-century, love-lyric contained in the "Harley Miscellany" manuscript. The poem contains three languages: Anglo-Norman French, Latin, and Middle English, and is assumed to have been written by a cosmopolitan Englishman, studying at a Paris univerisity.

This design represents a fashionable noblewoman of the thirteenth century, dressed for the courts of England or France. Her outfit comes in three separate and removable pieces: and underdress, overdress, and a cap and veil combination. The colors of this design, green, rose and gold are meant to suggest Spring and go beautifully with the coloring of the doll chosen as the base.

Thegreen and rose floral over-gown, or sur-coat, is cut low at the neck and hemmed high to better show off the beautiful rose color and trimmings of the camise. The v-neckline of the fitted bodice is accentuated with deep rose ribbon coming to a point at a high waist with a diamond shaped green gem. The sleeves are gathered at the upper arm where they are trimmed in rose ribbon and green gems, then flare into bell-sleeves, with show off the sleeves of the undergarment and are lined with the same rose material. A rose-colored corded belt is knotted at the waist.

The little cap, or coif, came into fashion in the thirteenth century, often in conjunction with a veil; the coif here is of the same material as the overdress and the sheer veil is rose-colored; the cap is held on with a green ribbon chin-strap.
