Viéneme a la memoria
dónde la vi primero,
y aquel lugar do
començé d'amalla.

There comes to my memory
the place I first saw her
and where I began to love her.

The coloring and facial detail on this doll are absolutely beautiful and did not need to be changed. The shiny black hair contrasts with the creamy skin and almond-shaped, pale green eyes.

These pictures show the veil and headdress removed in order to display the doll's intricate hairstyle, which is further adapted from the style she was came with in which two sections of hair on either side of her face are pulled tightly and smoothly down and back, with smaller sections allowed to fall in long curls.

With the rest of the hair I have twisted two sections, poufing them at the sides (which is a typical look at the time) and coiled them up around the head; the back section was braided, then twisted into a thick chignon. The hairstyle is secured with pearl-tipped hair-pins, which is also appropriate to the period.

leonskirt.jpg

This shows closer detail of the pattern on the underskirt, as well as the girdle. The girdle, or belt, is in a style which remained in vogue for many years. Clasped in front, it rides low on the hips accentuated the dropped, pointed waistline of the dress; the other end trails down the front of the skirt almost to the floor. At the end of these girdles would be some large ornament: a pendant, cross, or pomander. This girdle is made of 'gold' seed beads, spacers, and larger antique-gold beads with an engraved rose-motif; it ends in a large cross which was a popular motif in Catholic Spain--this is an actual cross pendant carved from semi-precious stone. The girdle, like the chain on the bodice, is hand-made and strung on thin, gold wire.
